Toynbee Arnold Joseph

Arnold Toynbee (1889-1975; ODNB), Balliol Coll., Oxford; civil service, 1915-19; professor, Byzantine and modern Greek studies, London Univ., 1919-24; prolific as a commentator on world affairs, as a travel writer and as an historian; wrote A survey of international affairs, 1920-23, then every year to 1946; best known for A study of history (12 vols., 1934-61), a quasi-philosophical analysis of successive civilizations, with much attention to religions.
