Richard Stafford Cripps
(Richard) Stafford Cripps (1889-1950; ODNB), youngest son of Alfred Cripps, 1st Lord Parmoor; Univ. Coll., London; barrister, KC 1927; a committed Anglican; treasurer, World Alliance for Promoting International Friendship through the Churches; MP (Lab) East Bristol 1931-50; solicitor-general, 1930-31; chairman, Socialist League, 1933, with a reputation for extremism; advocate of a 'united front' against fascism, in alliance with other socialists and communists, then a 'popular front', to include liberals; expelled from the Labour party 1939 (until 1945); British ambassador to the Soviet Union, 1940-2; cabinet positions in the Churchill wartime coalition and the 1945 Labour government, including chancellor of the exchequer, 1947-50.
