Cyril John Deverell
Cyril Deverell (1874-1947; ODNB), army officer; served in the First World War, with notable qualities as a divisional commander; KBE, 1926; served in India, 1927-31, including as chief of the general staff, Delhi; chief of the imperial general staff, 1936-7, sacked by Leslie Hoare-Belisha, secretary of state for war, for failing to support the government's priority of home and imperial defence, the threat from Nazi Germany on the continent of Europe notwithstanding; retired, 1937.
