William Grenfell, Lord Desborough (1855-1945: ODNB), Balliol Coll., Oxford; sportsman and landowner; m. 1887 Ethel Fane, heiress of Panshanger, the historic house near Hertford; MP (L) Salisbury, 1880-2, 1885-6, Hereford, 1892-3, (U) 1900-5; cr. 1st Baron, 1905; chairman, Thames Conservancy Board, 1905-37; numerous other local, national and sporting appointments, and member of many committees; his two eldest sons, including Julian Grenfell, were killed during the 1914-18 war.
