Conyers Surtees (1858-1933; WWW), army officer and antiquary; served in Egypt, South Africa, and France and Belgium during the First World War; Lord of the Manor, Mainsforth, chairman of Durham County bench of magistrates; high sheriff of Co. Palatine, 1927-8; M.P. (Co. U), Gateshead, 1918-22; kt 1932; publications include 'various histories of parishes in Co. Durham, and also records of the Surtees family'.
