James Maxton (1885-1946; ODNB), school teacher and political organiser; member, Independent Labour Party (ILP) 1904; chairman, Scottish ILP 1913-19; pacifist and conscientious objector, imprisoned 1916; leading figure of the socialist 'Red Clydeside' group; Labour MP Bridgeton, Glasgow, 1922-46; noted orator, and House of Commons 'character'; chairman, ILP 1926-31, 1934-9; large part in the ILP disaffiliation from the Labour party, 1932.
