Robert Jardine (1875-1950), vicar of St Paul's, Darlington, 1927; volunteered in 1937 to conduct marriage ceremony in France for the duke of Windsor and Mrs Wallis Simpson, despite the Church's prohibition of religious re-marriages of divorced persons and a public warning from Henson, as his bishop; forced to resign by his parish, he emigrated to the USA, seeking to exploit the notoriety of his royal connection.
