Ernst Troeltsch
Ernst Troeltsch (1865-1923), liberal protestant theologian, philosopher and historian of religion; professor of philosophy, University of Berlin, 1915-23; secretary of the Prussian Ministry of Public Worship, 1921-3; of all his writings, his The social teachings of the Christian churches and groups (1915) especially influential in England; accepted invitations to lecture at King's College, London and at Oxford in 1923 before his death intervened; emphasised the interdependent rather than separate nature of the Church and the world; despite tensions exacerbated by the distinction between society and the state in modernity, their close interactions shaped the Christian course of civilisation; associated tension between relativism and absolutism in Troeltsch's philosophy of history remained unresolved.
