Wilhelm Dibelius
Wilhelm Dibelius (1876-1931), German writer and sometime professor of English studies, Univ. of Berlin; his book England (1923), written for a German public to make better known to them their wartime foe; stirred much interest in England itself, reinforcing shift from race to national character in understanding cultural diversity in the interwar period; nature of English liberty as 'limitation of the power of the state as against the individual', and conception of the essence of 'full citizenship' as being 'let alone' by the state of particular interest to Dibelius and his English readers (174-5); contrasted with widespread acceptance of the Church of England's subordination to the state (343-5), reinforced by the rejection of the Revised Prayer Book, on which Henson commented in his entry for 30 Jan. 1931.
