Nikolaus Pevsner (1902-1983; ODNB), lecturer, history of art and archtecture, Gottingen Univ., 1929-33; refugee from Germany, supported by Academic Assistance Council; fellow Univ. of Birmingham, 1934-5; prolific writer and broadcaster on English art and architecture; briefly interned 1940; naturalized 1946; lecturer in fine art, Birkbeck Coll., London, 1942-59, professor 1959-69; Slade professor of fine art, Univ. of Cambridge, 1949-55, and Univ. of Oxford, 1968-9; best known for his county-by-county series on The Buidlings of England.
