Hewlett Johnson
Hewlett Johnson (1874-1966; ODNB), Wadham Coll., Oxford; vicar of St Margaret's, Altrincham, 1908-22, rural dean of Bowden, 1922-24; a liberal in theology, socialist in politics, and a pacifist; made dean of Manchester by the first Labour prime minister, MacDonald, 1924; dean of Canterbury, 1931-63; became favourable towards communism and the USSR, and known as the 'Red Dean'; author of Christianity and communism (1936), and the very popular The socialist sixth of the world (1939); awarded the Stalin peace prize, 1952.
