Thomas Tout (1855-1929; ODNB), professor of history, 1890-1925 at Owen's College, Manchester, taking a large part in its conversion to the University of Manchester, and becoming a leading figure in the British historical profession; prolific contributor to The dictionary of national biography; author of The political history of England 1216-1377 (1905), and Chapters in the adminstrative history of England (6 vols, 1920-31); a devout Anglican.
