Frederick Alexander Lindemann

Frederick Lindemann (1886-1957; ODNB), physicist educated in Berlin and Paris; professor of experimental philosophy and director of the Clarendon Laboratory, Univ. of Oxford, 1919-56 (with interruptions); from the early 1920s a friend and advisor of Winston Churchill, notably on defence issues; chief scientifc advisor to the wartime government, 1940-45; Baron Cherwell, 1940; paymaster-general, 1941-45, 1951-3; CGH, 1953; viscount 1956.
