Alfred Marshall

Alfred Marshall (1842-1924; ODNB), founder and inspiration of the Cambridge school of economics; his Principles of Economics (1890) was built around a neoclassical theoretical structure, but sought to relate economics to the real world; Industry and Trade (1919) reflected his deep concerns about the effects of the First World War, and the damage, not just from conflict but from the blockade of Germany.
