Arthur Clough (1819-61; ODNB), poet; life-long friend of Thomas and Matthew Arnold, sons of Thomas Arnold, headmaster of Rugby; resigned his tutorship at Oriel College, Oxford, in 1848 when he could no longer subscribe to the Church of England's thirty-nine articles.
