George Savile, 1st marquess of Halifax (1633-95; ODNB), leading politician and minister under Charles II, James II (briefly) and William III, noted for his oratory and efforts to secure moderation and balances between conflicting factions ('trimming'), best expressed in his The character of a trimmer (1685).
