Gabriele D'Annunzio
Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863-1938), Italian poet, playwright, air force pilot and war hero; led a military takeover of Fiume on 12 September 1919, in protest against its proposed allocation to Yugoslavia rather than Italy by the Treaty of Saint German, and ruled as the self-styled Duce of the 'Regency of the Italian Carnaro' in Fiume, 1919-20.
