Sidney Webb (1859-1947; ODNB), prolific author on social, economic, industrial and political issues, and socialist propagandist, often with his wife Beatrice Webb; leading figure in the Fabian Society from 1885 until his death; co-foiunder of the London School of Economics, and professor of public administration, 1912-27; member of numerous committees and commissions; MP (Lab), Seaham, Durham, 1922-9; president, board of trade, 1924; 1st Baron Passfield (1929); dominions and colonial secretary, 1929-30, colonial secretary, 1930-31.
