[Nicolaus Emil Hermann] Adolph Ahlers (1864-1943), naturalised British citizen appointed German consul to Sunderland and Seaham Harbour, 1906; found guilty on a charge of high treason at Durham assizes in December 1914, but successfully appealed, causing anti-German riots in Sunderland; his naturalisation revoked in 1919.
