James Hertzog (1866-1942; ODNB), Boer general during the South African War, 1900-2; political career, and minister in Louis Botha's government of the Union of South Africa from 1910 to 1914, when, as a defender of Afrikaner interests and critic of pro-British policies, he resigned to form the National Party; prime minister, South Africa, 1924-39.
