Church Socialist League
The Church Socialist League was established in 1906 after the success of the Labour movement in returning candidates to parliament in the election of that year. Unlike its rival, the Christian Social Union, the League embraced socialism, seeking to bring land and capital into common ownership. Leading founders included W. H. Frere and Paul Bull of the Community of the Resurrection at Mirfield, and Conrad Noel, the 'red vicar' of Thaxted, Essex. The League dissolved in 1923.
