Westcott is the only one of them all who could be described as a gentleman. The rest are mostly of labouring parents. The levels of intellectual and cultural life cannot but sink in this diocese. Can we allow ourselves to hope that the standard, moral & spiritual, will be raised?
"God chose the foolish things of the world, that he might put to shame them that are wise." It is a pity that so many of them have been already working as laymen, so that their Ordination hardly means any change of occupation. The sense of a solemn new Adventure – rising up, and following the master – has no place in their experience. They are spiritually blasés!
