Friday, May 1st, 1931.

A brilliant day, but cold wind.

Herbert from Easington Colliery came to see me. I had a "heart–to–heart" talk with him about his parish and about himself. It was rather difficult for me, and rather horrible for him, but que voulez vous? It is all in the day's work!

Mr and Mrs Nicholson from Southill came to lunch they seemed pleasant, conventional folk.

I motored into Durham with Derek, whom I deposited at the school with his luggage. He made a pleasant impression on everyone at the Castle, and I shall miss him. Then I attempted to see Moulsdale, who, however, had gone to Newcastle. After attending Evensong in the Cathedral, I had some talk with the Bishop of Jarrow, & then returned to Auckland. I picked up in his room the little book, "This Church and Realm" which Malden has just published. It appears to be an argument against ‘Disestablishment', but the author ignores the Bishop of Durham altogether although it would hardly be excessive to say that it is the Bishop alone who has made the issue of Disestablishment actual at this time.
