Heavy rain: squally & generally detestable. I completed the sermon for the Cathedral on Jan: 4th. Seven volume of Loeb Classical Library arrived; they give the word 'classical' a generous significance:
1. Demosthenes, Olynthiacs, Philippics
2. S. Basil. The Letters. vol. III.
3. Lysias
4. Bede. Opera historica 2. Vols.
5. S. Augustine. Select Letters
6. Philo. Vol III.
When the Venerable Bede takes his place in the same company with Virgil & Horace, the reproach of an arbitrary use of terms has been rolled away from "scholars".
I walked round the Park, where the streams were in spate, & everything violently wet.
Derek sent me a volume of Six Plays, including one, 'Socrates' by Clifford Bax. He could not get it separately. I read it through with the more interest since the boy is clearly impressed by it; and I was pleased to find myself interested. The picture of Socrates is well presented, true to the dialogues, and giving an effective summary of the facts.
