Thursday, August 14th, 1930, The Roman Wall.
Peers & I left the Castle about 9:30 a.m., and motored to Peel on the Wall. There we were joined by Mr Bosanquet and his son, David, a tall lad of 15. We walked along the Wall as far as Borcovicus, examining it with some care. We lunched en route, and then motored to Rock Hall, Alnwick, where we had arranged to spend the night as Mr Bosanquet's guests. On the way, we called at Wallington, and found Sir Charles Trevelyan at home. While he was showing us the house, of which he is justly proud, his wife arrived together with Sir Hugh Bell, her father, and Mrs Wintringham. We continued our journey, & arrived at Rock Hall in good time for dinner. Mrs Bosanquet was the daughter of Thomas Hodgkin, the historian, and is herself a Quaker. The family consists of 2 sons and 4 daughters. Mr Bosanquet is an accomplished scholar and antiquary. He farms his ancestral acres, & pursues his favourite studies. The whole aspect of their household pleased me.
