Friday, June 13th, 1930.

I celebrated the Holy Communion in the chapel at 8.15 a.m. the 4 candidates communicated.

My morning was variously frittered away: and in the afternoon I went in to Durham, and presided at a meeting of the Religious Education Association. After tea I had interviews with the four candidates. They are not in any way remarkable, but they impress me as earnest, well–intentioned and devout.

They are the following:–

Deacons Arthur Howell Bowen
Frederick Earnest Marples
Priests Charles Ian Pettitt
Emery Lonsdale Richardson

Harry Cumming Bruce writes to me from Sandhurst to say that he has seen my portrait in the academy, and thinks it is very good. He is nearing the end of his training.

Richards, Rawlinson, Dawson–Walker, Wallis and Moulsdale came over from Durham. These with the two Bishops, Knight & Woods, were enough to scare into humility even the most self–assertive of Ordination candidates, let alone the quarternion of amiable and anaemic youths on whom they actually bore!
