June 5th 1887, when I was ordained to the diaconate by Bishop Mackarness in Cuddesdon Parish Church was just such a morning as this – warm, brilliant, full of the scents & sights of summer. I have travelled far in the course of these 43 years and the end of my journey is yet undisclosed. Certainly the aspect of the world has changed amazingly.
I succeeded in writing an Address for the Diocesan Conference which meets on the 14th June. It occupied all my time.
In the afternoon I walked round the Park with my Chaplain, & found the heat almost excessive.

Dr Adam Philip of the Manse, Invergowrie, sends me two books which he has written viz: the Pedigree of Archbishop Davidson, published in 1903, when he became Archbishop: and 'The Devotional Literature of Scotland'. I did not realize that Davidson came of ancestry mainly composed of Presbyterian ministers. Evidently his fellow–countrymen were much exalted by his gaining the Primacy, which they now regard as a peculium of the Presbytery.
