The swifts have arrived. They were wheeling and whistling before my window as I dressed.

I receive a letter from Rawlinson which tells me that this woeful business in W. Hartlepool has been nosed out by the reporters, & that there is much evil local gossip. Also, I received a letter from Mrs G. which I answered. I revised the sermon for York.

Ella and I left the Castle at 2.30 p.m., and motored to York in about two hours. We were hospitably received my Mrs Ford. We visited the Cathedral, and walked for an hour in the City before dressing for dinner. Divers [sic] persons dined including Archdeacon & Mrs Cooper. They have two sons at Oxford (New College) and give an ill account of the tone & morality of the University. Against this must be set the testimony of the Dean who has sons at Oxford. He allows, however, that many disconcerting reports have reached him. The general conclusion is that Oxford is not the place for Ordination candidates.
