I motored to Durham, & presided at a meeting of the Lay Helpers' Association, at which we decided to allow payment for continuous service. The shortage of clergy compels the employment of laymen to an extent which was never contemplated when the Association was formed. This circumstance has anything but a wholesome effect on the laymen concerned, and an even worse effect on the people. The first are wonderfully puffed up in their own eyes: and the last begin to wonder whether the ministrations of volunteer layman is so inferior to that of the professional clergy as to justify the cost of the latter!

There are signs of alarm as to the Archbishop's motion in next week's Assembly. A Colonel Freeman writes to me entreating that I will induce his Grace to withdraw it! I sent a copy of the pamphlet to the Bishop of Carlisle, & accompanied it with a letter, in which I said that it was my intention to support the motion & to speak for it, adding the suggestion that he should do the same. But Bishops are fearful folk!
