Pattinson & Derek accompanied me to Darlington, and then went on to see High Force. I travelled comfortably enough to London. There I attended the Meeting of Bishops at Lambeth. The agenda was meagre enough. Temple produced the draft of the resolution on Church and State which he will move at the Church Assembly in February. It was slightly amended, & then approved. The Archbishop of Canterbury described his negociations [sic] with the Government in the matter of the Schools, and declared himself hopeful of a successful settlement. But I doubt whether his Grace is not excessively optimistic. I dined in Park Lane. Miss Haldane was the only other guest. We had much pleasant conversation.

I had some talk with the Bishop of Birmingham, with whom I walked from Lambeth to Westminster. He is very obstinate, & seems incapable of emancipating himself from a set of rather obsolete opinions. The situation in Birmingham is obscure, and may develope [sic] in an untoward manner.
