Edwin sent me a bundle of papers explaining his present impasse. I sent him a cheque for £102: that being the exact amount of his indebtedness. Then I fell to work on a little sermon for the Speech day at Q. Ethelburger's School at Harrogate tomorrow. These silly "side–shows" devour time & energy which could be better employed.

I motored to Durham, & presided at a meeting of the Finance Board, which was followed by a meeting of the Conference Comtee. The financial report was anything but satisfactory. It was decided that the Sunday question should be taken as the subject for discussion at the meeting of the Diocesan Conference on November 2nd. But what good can come of discussing that subject? We have a dwindling minority of Sabbatarians, and a waxing minority of Sunday–secularisers among the clergy. The first are fanatical Protestants: the last are extreme Anglo–Catholicks. Neither has any useful contribution to make towards a solution of the Sunday problem.
