The thaw continued during the night, & most of the snow had disappeared by the morning. Lionel and I walked round the Park in the afternoon, and afterwards motored to Croxdale where I confirmed 63 candidates in the parish church. The coughing of the congregation attested sufficiently the prevalence of influenza in the district.

Waterberry, the Vicar of Venerable Bede, Gateshead, wrote to tell me that he had accepted appointment to S. Mark's Church, Newcastle. There are now vacant in this diocese the following parishes:–

1. S. Nicholas, Durham. Patron Trustees.
2. Shadforth. " Dean & Chapter.
3. S. James, Stockton " The Crown.
4. Ven: Bede, Gateshead " The Crown.
5. Swalwell. " Rector of Whickham.
6. S. Barnabas, Hendon " Rector of Hendon

Very shortly there will also be vacant a living in my gift – S. Luke, Pallion – where the Vicar (Courtenay) is resigning. Where are 7 respectable incumbents to be discovered?
