Days, that in spite

Of darkness, by the light

Of a clear mind, are day all night.

Life that dares send

A challenge to his end,

And, when it comes, say, Welcome, friend

Crashaw.

I wasted the morning over my Journal. The energy which I threw into an abortive effort to defeat the Enabling Bill astonishes me. But the Life and Liberty agitation followed so closely on the disreputable clamour against my Consecration to the bishoprick of Hereford, & was so largely the work of the same people that I could not help regarding it with dislike.

I motored to Durham, & instituted the new Archdeacon of Auckland, & then went on to Heworth & collated Richardson to the Vicarage. Jimmie Dobbie acted as my chaplain. There was a large congregation, & a good muster of the local clergy.
