Monday, December 3rd, 1928.

This fatuous lecture for the Castle Fund, which I am pledged to give at Harrogate on Wednesday evening haunts me. It is these "side–shows" which take up time, & ruin one's real work.
The Bishop of Jarrow came to see me, & stayed to discuss various matters until nearly 8 p.m.
The news about the King's illness this morning is grave, & it is evident that we must contemplate the contingency of a fatal termination. This would be a calamity indeed. Tomorrow the great pageant of the Archbishop's enthronement is to take place in Canterbury Cathedral. Will it coincide with the passing of George V?
