19th Sunday after Trinity, October 14th, 1928.
A bright and frosty morning. The leaves grown more brilliant and fall more quickly, like the efforts of aging geniuses, which cannot be sustained.
I celebrated the Holy Communion in the chapel at 8 a.m. We numbered 13 including three Brydens and five guests.
After breakfast I wrote letters to the following:–
| 1. |
Canon Solloway. |
| 2. |
Rev J. E. Dobbie |
| 3. | Gilbert Simpson |
| 4. | Gerald Rainbow |
| 5. |
W. Allen Young. |
| 6. |
Frank Pember |
| 7. | Sir James Marchant |
| 8. |
Mary Lyttelton |
| 9. | Sir George Craik |
Everybody motored into Durham to attend service in the Cathedral, but before doing so Godfrey & I walked in the Park, which is now resplendent in autumnal glory.
I motored to South Shields, & there preached in the large hut, which does duty as S. Francis's church. It was the dedication Festival. Both the clergy, Warner & Day, are very poor creatures.
