The wonderful weather continues, delightful but not good for any kind of work.

I wrote 'personal appeals' for the Castle to the following reputably wealthy men, who are connected with the County of Durham: ––

1. Sir John Ropner Bart, refused.

2. Major Ropner M.P. rec.' £26.5.

3. Lord Melchet (Sir Alfred Mond) refused.

4. Sir James Knott.

5. Sir Walter Runciman Bart.

6. R.B. Webster Esq.

7. Mrs Webster.

8. W.O. Trotter Esq.

9. Colonel Pollitt D.S.O. rec: £5.5.0.

Lionel and I walked round the Park, and then had tea with the ladies under the copper beech, very pleasantly.

I motored to Lumley Castle, and dined very agreeably. The party numbered 12, including Lord & Lady Ridley, Roger Lumley & his Wife, & the Duke & Duchess of York. I had much talk with the Duchess during dinner, & with the Duke afterwards. I noted with much satisfaction H.R.H. has quite mastered his stammer, & now talks freely. He grows very like the King in aspect & manner.
