Monday, June 25th, 1928.
A dull and rather chilly day, with showers at intervals, not at all cheerful.
Lord Phillimore wrote approving my suggested declaration, & suggesting Lawrence Hardy as the right person to move it. I wrote to the Archbishop of York on the subject.
Spencer Wade came to lunch. He seems to be making a good start at Gateshead Fell.
After lunch, I went in to Durham & presided at a meeting of the Church Building Board, & made various grants.
John told me that the white–headed blackbird, which has haunted the garden last year and again this year, has a nest in the ivy at the east end of the chapel. There are undoubtedly more blackbirds & thrushes in the garden than in any previous year of my episcopate. Their singing has been incessant, & their appearance on the lawns is almost constant.
Mrs Heawood invaded my study with a proof of the invitation card for the Mansion House Meeting, as it had been amended by the Lord Mayor's Secretary: he had insisted on adding my name to the list of speakers.
