"Artifex' has an excellent article in the 'Manchester Guardian' on 'Science and human immortality'. He speaks acutely of the "fallacy of misplaced deference", and suggests politely but clearly that Sir Arthur Keith knows nothing of the problem which he solves so decisively.
I occupied the morning in writing a short sermon for use on Wednesday.
Dawson sends me 'Jix's' book with a request that I would write a short signed review of it. I replied that I would, and then motored to Chester–le–Street, where I took part in a Circuit Rally in the Wesleyan Chapel. My speech was not very suitable to the occasion, and not very agreeable to the audience. The latter interested me. It was largely composed of elderly people, who probably belonged mostly to the small shop–keeping class. I gathered from the announcements that there was a considerable financial deficit. Dr Jackson, the Rector, attended the meeting. Before accepting the invitation, I had inquired whether It would be agreeable to him that I should do so. I returned to the Castle after the meeting, arriving a few minutes before 10 p.m.
