The papers Announce the death of Lord Cave, and the appointment of the Attorney General, Sir Douglas Hogg, to succeed him as Lord Chancellor. My only acquaintance with Lord Cave has been in the House of lords, but there we were on very friendly terms, & I formed a genuine regard for him. I allowed myself to write a letter of condolence to Lady Cave.

I spent the morning not very profitably on the Bunyan Article. In the afternoon the High School Girls performed 'Ivanhoe' in the State Room, to raise funds for some C.M.S. venture.

Jimmie came to see me, & I told him that he should be ordained at Trinity: that he must have Belmont, &, at the expiration of 3 months notice, transfer himself to Sunderland. I wrote to his Vicar, Marsh, announcing this.

The Church Family Newspaper has a front–page article endorsing Canon Raven's plea for a Female Priesthood, and adducing the support of the Dean of S. Paul's. "We are getting on", as the late Lord Oxford would have said. It is all really very absurd.
