I made a start on the Furness Sermon. My difficulty lies in the vindication of any adequate religious significance in a Commemoration of the foundation of a Monastery which the Reformation destroyed!
In the afternoon I motored to Durham, and confirmed more than 200 persons in the Cathedral. Then I had tea with the Bishop of Jarrow, and returned to Auckland. Scarcely had I arrived in my study before James's father, Mr Wilson called to thank me for my kindness to his son. He seemed a decent kind of working man, proud of his family, 5 sons & 2 daughters, of whom James is the youngest.
I went carefully through the list of the diocesan clergy with the object of selecting an incumbent to succeed Morris Young at Shillington: and finally, I wrote to J.C. Douglas of Hart.
Another book on Bolshevist Russia arrived:– "The Mind and Face of Bolshevism, and Examination of Cultural Life in Soviet Russia by Rene Fulop–Miller. Translated from the German by F.S. Flint & D.F. Tait. London & New York G.P. Putnam's Sons Ltd." The book is a cumbrous volume bound in black cloth & containing 307 pages.
