The Auckland Brotherhood dispersed. On the whole the reunion has been enjoyable, and, unless the Brethren were more mendacious than one would like to think possible, they enjoyed it. I motored to Durham where I had an interview with a schoolmaster, named Wilkinson, whom I have accepted as a candidate for Ordination. Then I had an interview with Mrs Gerald Wilson, who has been bred a Papist; I admitted her formally to the communion of the C. of E, but whether the Popish leaven is exorcized I have my doubt.
Lionel and I lunched with Wilson, and then attended the Prize distribution at Durham School. Canon Holland distributed the prizes: &, of course, I had to make a speech. It was fatuous enough. After this, I returned to Auckland.
I wrote a "character" for James, who will leave my service tomorrow. Nothing will ever reconcile me to the necessity of parting with servants, but, of course, in the case of youngsters, it is inevitable, since their careers must be thought of.
