Lilburn from S. Oswald's, Hartlepool, burst in on me in a collapsing condition! An outbreak of "Hail Mary's" in the parish, and abstinence from lunch made him almost incoherent! But he is in no case for Good Friday and Easter; and where to find any help for him is hard to see.
I walked in the Park in spite of the rain, & called to see Harold Bryden.
Lionel and I motored o West Auckland, where I confirmed 121 persons from the parishes of St Helen's, & St Peter's; of which the population is as follows.
St Peter's, Bishop Auckland | 4940 |
S. Helen's, West Auckland | 7000 |
–– | 11.940 |
About 240 persons reached the age of 14 last year. We confirmed half of them. This is much above the diocesan average.
The evening paper reports Winston Churchill's speech in producing the Budget. He increases the Sinking Fund, and does not increase the income & super–taxes. He "raids" the Road Fund to the extent of £12,000,000. There are a good many "indirect" taxes, which will be denounced as 'protective'. But the money must be found.
