Wednesday, April 22nd, 1925.

If a man consider the original of this great ecclesiastical dominion, he will easily perceive, that the Papacy is no other than the Ghost of the deceased Roman Empire, sitting crowned upon the grave thereof: for so did the Papacy start up on a sudden out of the ruins of that heathen power.

Craufurd sends me a rather elaborate & very affectionate "Collins". He has certainly inherited his mother's gift of elaborate compliment. From Elsie & Rex I received a photograph of my godson, a sturdy–looking little boy, who, however, carries no suggestion of his father! Jimmie Dobbie writes a characteristic letter.

In the morning I worked at the Book, & after lunch, went to Durham in order to preside at a meeting of the Bede College Committee, which assembled for the important purpose of appointing a new Principal. Seven selected candidates attended, and 'the lot fell upon' the Revd C.T. Braley, Vice–Principal of Culham. After the meeting I had tea with Archdeacon Derry, and then returned to Auckland in the teeth of a furious gale.
