Antique black Madonnas and crude early crucifixes and their rough popular replicas have probably wrought more supernatural marvels, both psychical and physical, than all the achievements of the great masters.

I finished the Broad–casting Sermon, & fooled away the rest of the morning. Also, I prepared notes for a sermon tomorrow morning.
In the afternoon, the weather being fine, I walked round the Park with the dogs, stopping to look at a hockey match & talk with Dr McCullagh. I fell in with two miners, and talked with them. They were in work, & disposed to take a moderate view of the situation in the coal–fields. They promised if not working next Saturday to come & see the Castle: & I noted their names – Robinson and Nicholson – in my note–book.
Ernest arrived from Sedbergh for the vacation. The "Church Times" complains that the Newcastle papers report the doings and sayings of the Bishop of Durham, and thus conveys to an unsuspecting public that there are people in the world who are actually interested in either!
