I met Bernard in the Athenaeum last Thursday. He at once began speaking about my Charge, which he had just read through. "It's the best thing you've ever done", he said: and he was quite enthusiastic in his approval. I was gratified, as I hold his judgement in high regard, but all the signs point to the Charge falling quite flat! Bishop Knox writes that he has "read it with the very deepest interest from cover to cover".

I received a lengthy tee–total protest from Bothamley, and was fool enough to reply to it. Also I spent some time in writing at length to Jimmie on the subject of his Ordination, that is, on the point whether, or not, he shall be ordained. If he is to be ordained, the decision shd not be postponed, for he is 23 next May.

I became energetic as what the Americans call a "sleuth", writing with respect to the Revd Nevill Hudson to the Bishops of London and Manchester, the Vicar of St Philip's, Dalston, and the Revd F. M. Sykes.

My whole day was frittered away in writing letters, reading newspapers, and taking a 'constitutional' round the Park. It is difficult to see how and when I am to write the History of the Reformation.
