No, when the fight begins within himself,

A man's worth something. God stoops o'er his head.

Satan looks up between his feet – both tug –

He's left, himself, i' the middle: the soul wakes

And grows. Prolong that battle through his life!

Never leave growing till the life to come!

Browning. Bishop Blougram's Apology

I send another cheque for £400 to the electrical contractor. This makes £882.0.0 already paid, and no light yet! I worked at the 'Charge' for the Ordination candidates.

I travelled to Leeds, and was entertained there by Mr Kitson Clark, the President of the Literary Institute. I delivered my Rede Lecture on 'Byron' to a numerous and attentive audience, of which a considerable section was composed of grey–beards. Why should they be interested in a disreputable poet? I found mine host an intelligent, cultivated, and well–informed man. He spoke very despondently of the outlook for British trade, & did not see how we could recover without "coming to terms with America", so that American capital should re–vitalize British industry. He told me that he had voted for the Enabling Bill in the Rep: Ch: Ass:, but now recalled much that I said in opposition, and was beginning to think that I was probably right!
