Easter Monday, April 21st, 1924.
A warm bright morning but with an insecure promise for the day. The chimney in my study smoked constantly, rendering the room almost uninhabitable, a circumstance the more exasperating since I had much to do in preparation for my departure this afternoon. It is ever so: one's instruments break and fail precisely when they are most needed! This is as true of human instruments as of the others, & more trustworthy kind.
For income tax purposes I have been computing exactly my "literary earnings" for the year Easter 1923 to Easter, 1924.: the list stands thus:

" | Edinburgh Review | 23 |
