Thursday, April 3rd, 1924.

This evening we motored to Monkwearmouth, and, there, in a woeful building, once a Presbyterian Chapel but now a parish church, S. Cuthbert's, I confirmed 66 candidates. They all plainly belonged to the lowest class of the community and have been mostly living on the dole literally for years: but they behaved with reverence, & I came away pleased with the service.
