Another morning at the Article. Then Bell, the Vicar of Monkheselden came to talk over business, & stayed to lunch. Slim the Vicar of Sunnybrow, wrote to announce his departure for a month on the score of a bad throat, & to ask me to arrange for his duty! Clayton flew about on his bicycle, & arranged something. Then we motored to South Shields where I confirmed 120 persons in the parish church. The disproportion in the sexes, 30 males to 90 females, displeased me, and I took the impression that matters were not going well. There are no curates, & old Sedcole's death leaves a void not easy to fill. We returned to Auckland after the service.
