Saturday, December 8th, 1923.

The Government is in a minority of about 90: & the question is necessarily raised. Who will govern the country? It is impossible not to compassionate the unhappy Prime Minister. Placed in office by an almost unprecedented act of party faith, Mr Baldwin, against the advice of the most trusted chiefs of his party, has forced a General Election in which the party has been overwhelmed. What title to continued confidence can he claim?

I motored to Boldon, & consecrated so much of the new Church of St George as has been completed. Before the service I removed two crucifixes which were suspended over the pulpit & the credence table. After tea, I returned to the Castle.
